'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Vital Meets Scroobius Pip

Something a bit different for you all now; I spoke to electronic hip hop artist, who goes by the name of Scroobius Pip yesterday, to give us a different angle on the beautiful game. How does a professional artist perceive football as a whole?

And Pip is no mug - his debut album 'Angles' reached the top 30 in the UK album charts, and is an avid Millwall fan. So he certainly fits the bill. Hopefully we'll all enjoy a different insight into the world of football.

We hear that you support Millwall?
My whole family are from south London, so I have been going down Millwall from an early age. Love it!

How often do you get to games?
Not as often as I would like these days! As a kid it was every home game and at least 5 or 6 away games a season but these days (with touring) I'm lucky to get to The Den more than twice a season. Just got hold of tickets for Millwall v Leeds though! Which will be fun because we are on tour with Kid Carpet at the moment, who is a Leeds fan.

When we take some time off to make the second album, I'll be down at the Den much more often.

First memories of Football?
Being at the old Den I guess. In the family enclosure they used to have these weird people doing kids theatre and entertainment in the terraces at half time. Was always a little creepy but it's a good memory!

Favourite player?
It's really tough because Millwall has had such a variation of heroes! Some put up there because of skill and technique (Sheringham, Cascarino, Harris....) but then others for their...ahem....'grass roots' style (Hurlock, Stevens, Muscat).

Favourite game?
That's another tough one. Every win over Crystal Palace and West Ham is always good. One of my early favourites was when we went 1-0 up and Anfield. It ended 1-1 but it was an amazing place to go ahead at when you are a team like Millwall. And of course EVERY match in our FA cup run, including the final in which we got destroyed by Man U but still made ten times as much noise and celebrated far more than the United fans.

Favourite ground?
The old Den! Of course! I have a little corner of turf from the old Den in my back garden. It's always tough to officially name a ground 'the new' Den. We have been there for years and it's starting to show so the name isn't that accurate...!

Do you think Millwall gets a bad reputation for things no longer relevant?
Yes I do. We have done so much in the last 15 years or so to repair our reputation. But ANY incident at Millwall will get reported far worse than at any other ground. A prime example is the last game at the old den where the fans where INVITED onto the pitch to celebrate and take souvenirs, yet the papers reported on savage pitch invasions and destruction of our own ground! I was there as a 15 year old and at no point did I feel threatened or see any aggression. 'No one likes us, we don't care'

Dennis Wise - god or moron?
God! 'He's only five foot four, he'll break ya f@*cking jaw'. He did great for us. Got us to an FA cup final, just outside the play offs and into Europe… but then it all went wrong for us unfortunately.

Ever been to Bloomfield Road?
Sadly i haven't. But then you've gotta have a dream....! We'll be playing you soon, don't worry - clearly through Kenny Jackett taking us up!

Most entertaining league in England?
I love Millwall and I love the lower leagues but I'm no idiot. The Premier League is probably the most entertaining league in the world right now, let alone England. It seems we may pay for it now with so many teams going into debt to make it that way though.

Is the game in the Football League more real than the Premier League?
I've never understood that kind of question! It's all fairly real! Largely due to the real people kicking a real ball around a real football pitch!

Thoughts on England under Fabio Capello?
He seems to be doing the job doesn't he! He has got Rooney scoring and got Walcott playing amazingly. If he could manage to get Gerrard and Lampard to play well together then we would have to erect a statue of him immediately!

But, yeah, I think he is doing a good job. Bringing Wright-Phillips back in and Walcott has given us pace. Hopefully, when it counts, he will be bold enough to drop either Gerrard or Lampard for the sake of the teams shape. I'd like to see Richards back in the team as well.

Foreign investment good or bad for the English game?
Good for me because no one would invest in Millwall so I don't have to worry about my team being ruined! I just get to see Robinho playing for Man City and allsorts of weird stuff like that. For the impartial observer it's great!

AND...

Three words to sum up Blackpool…
Black F*%king Pool!

Here are a couple of video clips from Scroobius Pip's album in conjunction with 'dan le sac'.
