The New Signings - Part 2

The New Signings - Part 2

Right Midfield - Adrian Forbes

Before: 7 Out Of 10
So Far: 7 Out Of 10.

Forbesy is one of those players who doesn`t have the greatest amount of skill, but will always give his all. In Blackpool Vitals article with Swansea, we came to the conclusion that Kev (From Swansea) would miss him, but the team wouldn`t. He`s a fans player, not too dissimilar to Brett Ormerod.

Blackpool is Adrian`s fourth club, after spells at Norwich, Luton and Swansea. Luton paid The Canaries 60K for his services. Forbes` time as a footballer has been blighted by injury however, and his bad luck doesn`t look like taking heed at the seaside.

From what I`ve seen of him, he`s a very energetic player. His ability to win headers is unbelievable if you see the size of him. He does get a bit excited when on the ball down the line, and sometimes doesn`t think about it properly, spoiling his good work before. Like so many others at our level, he cannot cross a ball consistently well. Also, he has already missed several games through injury this term, which is worrying.

Centre Midfield - Claus Jorgensen

Before: 8 Out Of 10.
So Far: 9 Out Of 10.

An international playing for Blackpool Football Club!!! Surely not? Well yes, but he only played for The Faroe Islands, and has recently retired!! Actually, he only played six times for them, which is shocking considering the Faroe Island`s FIFA world ranking.

All that aside, "Santa Claus" isn`t that bad a player! Jorgensen is an attacking midfielder, whose main strengths are passing and close control of the ball. During the 2002/2003 season, when he was playing for Bradford City, he scored in eight successive away games. He has showed already that he`s got an eye for a pass and is also willing to get forward to support the front men. Despite his impressive performances, the Dane (I`ll stop short of saying great!) is lacking fitness, and fitness comes with games. Considering his fitness isn`t great at the moment, he`s playing incredible well. I also believe that he`ll complement Keith Southern well in the midfield.

Claus has played in England for a large chunk of his playing career with spells at Coventry, Bradford and Bournemouth. He has also played abroad.

Anywhere - Simon Gillett

Before: 3 Out Of 10.
So Far: 9 Out Of 10.

We sign an unproven, young, inexperienced, Championship midfielder, on loan and with all the money we have. What do you think? You aren`t going to be happy. I wasn`t. His first game for us he was thrown in the deep end, centre midfield. To be fair to Simon, he couldn`t handle it. Simon Grayson, to his credit, has found him a better position, which he`s excelling at. Right midfield.

He has resemblance to Ian Morris of last season. Same position, and same work ethic. Both are keen to learn and ultimately succeed. Gillett also went out on loan to Walsall last season, but only played on a couple of occasions. He`s being given a full chance by Grayson here.

Left Wing - Wes Hoolahan

Before: 8 Out Of 10.
So Far: 10 Out Of 10.

Wes est fantastiqué! I say it in French because watching him is like watching poetry in motion, and French is the only language that I relate to poetry! Sad, sad lad! Signed on loan from Livingston, Hoolahan has made a big impact down the left hand side of midfield with his tricky skills. One of the only bright sparks in an awful start to the season, Wes spells fear into opposition week in, week out down the left, but also in the hole behind the front two. Much like Martin Bullock a few seasons ago. Wes once had a trial with Deportivo La Coruna after an impressive game for Shelbourne against the Spanish side in the Champions League qualifiers.

He has initial signed on loan, with an option of a permanent deal, which I`m sure Pool will be desperate to take up. The fee is believed to be around 100K and Pool can only take up that option if Livi don`t get promoted, the rumours say.

What Does This Prove About Grayson?

Again, all good signings. Gillett was a gamble, and has paid off, which seems to show a good scouting network or player judgement or possibly both. He does seem to be signing injury prone players however, with Forbes and Hoolahan having spells on the sidelines already, and Claus Jorgensen isn`t properly fit (although he doesn`t fit under the injury prone category).

What can he do with the midfield? Well it needs balance to start with, and I`m not sure if a middle of (from right to left) Gillett, Southern, Jorgensen, Hoolahan provides balance. Yes, there are two good wingers, but what happens when the ball bypasses them? Both fullbacks are easily exposed, and Grayson hasn`t of yet thought up a plan where we can play Gillett and Hoolahan together in the same team. Maybe Southern should be told to sit deeper, so he can cover? Or play Bean instead of Claus? But that would then mean we look defensive from the outset. It`s a tricky situation for Larry, but one he has to sort out quickly.
