It's Just Like London Buses.....
On Your Saddle!!Walsall came to town on the 1st April, the week after we at Blackpool VitalFootball broke the news about Valeri Belokon pouring money into Blackpool Football Club, and the day that the deal was confirmed in principal.
Two goals on the day saw off a poor Walsall side, my worst team of the season, to ease relegation fears at the seaside. Gareth Williams and Keith Southern the goalscorers with Rory 'Rent that ghost' Prendergast turning in a good performance, enhancing his chances of a new deal, which he got in the end.
Walsall were poor, and got what they deserved, relegation.
Unlucky...Play a relegation outfit one week, and a promotion one the next. 'Pool visited Southend and were very unlucky not to walk away with maximum points. Southend have made a huge improvement since the LDV Final a couple of years back, where infact Luke Guttridge played awful I recall, but won Southend the game in this encounter. Another late goal, 86 minutes this time, from Guttridge coupled with another Freddy Eastwood beauty beat 'pool after the visitors took the lead through Gareth Williams (again!!).
Priority for next season: Only play 80 minute games!!
Big Hearts...That's what 'pool had against Swansea. Swansea filled the 'Gene Kelly stand' and seemed fired up, especially with Lee 'look at me' Trundle performing his unimpressive antics on the pitch. The crowd lifted the players as they secured a 1-0 win through Keigan Parker's excellent finish (no, really!).
Man Mountain!!!Peter Clarke is exactly this!! I am one of his biggest critics (some ask how anyone can critise him!!) but he has been marvellous this year, after suffering from the fatal disease 'Long Ball Haggis', he has since taken Hendrybiotics and is fine.
The doctors (Grayson and Parkes) can confirm this now, that goal was special!! Flicking it over a defender and vollying the ball into the net is special, but, when you play centre half and it's the last minute, and you've rescued a point that was so valuable, that's extra special!! For the record, big Lloyd Owusus scored for The Bee's in the 59th minute with Sir PC rescuing a point in the 89th.
What A Clever Defender!!Paul Reid should be made a freeman of Barnsley. This sounds contaversial from me, but he should. For the reason that he knew exactly what he was doing!! Getting yourself sent off must be one of the worst things to do in the world. To have the nouse to know that they'll go 2-1 down if he doesn't foul, and to foul outside the box is brilliant. Without that point they gained, in hindsight, they may not have been promoted. They would have had to play Brentford, not Huddersfield, which could have been oh so different. He got sent off, but had confidence they'd hold on for a draw, which they did.
The game itself saw Keigan Parker score on 21 only for Brian Howard to equalise on 53. The game also marked the return of Tommy Wright, to a chorus a jeers from mainly the kop end.
So, without Paul Reid, Barnsley wouldn't have got promoted. Well, it isn't that simple, but I believe he had a large part to play in their eventual promotion.
I Retire!!!4 games, 3 defeats. That's my record away from home last season. Rotherham, Walsall and Scunthorpe United!! 7 goals against, none scored.
Anyway, the ground is in the middle of some shopping place, with nothing to do when you arrive at 1:30 beforehand, so we had to buy a football (tangerine I might add) to amuse ourselves. Not that I'm moaning. The banter with the locals was at times quite amusing.
Onto the game. We were dire. Never got hold of the ball, lacked something upfront (well everything actually!) and clearly didn't realise we weren't yet safe! The support was good, with a constant beat provided by the corregated iron at the back of the ground.
The result was a bad one, and we weren't mathmatically safe just yet, but reality showed we were. Billy Sharp scoring in the final minute to win the game, after good link up play with Andy Keogh, who himself looked very good, and would be an excellent signing. I'm saying no more!!
Oh, by the way, I did see one win, the 3-0 win at Hartlepool!! So I think I'll keep going, in the hope that there will be more Monkeys than Millers.
Final Day...What a game! The best attacking game of the season at Bloomfield Road. Both sides were safe (even though we weren't mathmatically) and just wanted to play free flowing football, which they did, too great effect.
A rare start for Matty Blinkhorn turned out to be a smart move, as he opened the scoring with a brilliant goal on 13 minutes. Then Darren Byfield scored on either side of the break for Gillingham (28 and 52) to put the visitors in front. Not for long, 4 minutes to be exact. Parker scoring, and 13 minutes later, on 69 minutes put 'pool infront again. But, again!!! Mike Flynn (good signing again?) scored in the 86th minute to sercure a point.
Nobody was too disappointed as we had nothing to play for really, and it was a marvellous game of football, the right way to cap off a season full of garbage.
Just a shame about the stupid invasion, and the stupid kids!!! BFC were stupid for making it quid a kid.
