Its fair to say that when Blackpool fans first learned of the Latvian banker who wanted to invest millions into our beloved club, most laughed off the notion. We could but dream of such an investment from a foreign source. Well, after the stir that Mr. B caused when he confirmed he would invest ฃ4.5 million into the club, most fans had found a new saviour! Little did we know it, but a new era had begun at Bloomfield Road, with a bright future promised. Indeed, Mr Belokon was and still is synonymous which his declaration that Pool would be competing with Man U and Chelsea in 5 years time. Another statement to snigger at, then day dream about and now truly believe in.
Whilst our promotion to The Championship was without doubt a magnificent effort all round, there must be special praise reserved for our lucky Latvian. It`s not just the money (though it does help!). There has been a complete transformation in and around the club. A new positive air has replaced the doom and gloom, mainly thanks to the man with an infectious smile and irrestibly charming command of the English language. The chairman and his new partner rightly stuck by Larry in the difficult early season period, and the rewards are there for all to see.
The Latvian link has been strengthened by the arrival of Kaspars Gorkss, who, in his limited first team opportunities, has impressed. Furthermore, Larry has already targeted Rubins, another experienced Latvian international. Rubins will join up with the Pool squad for pre season training. There are clear signs that Larry is utilisng his new found links and long may it continue, after all the Baltic state is an untapped resource.
Interestingly, our second successive pre season tour to Latvia will commence in a couple of weeks. This should allow Larry to take a look at a few more potential signings. Equally, our exposure to the Latvian public can only be a good thing. Just as United have dominated Asia, so too we can dominate little Latvia!
So here's to The Championship with BFC. Who knows, our popularity in Latvia may skyrocket sufficiently for a feeder club to be organised (as was hinted at by Mr. B himself not so long ago). Come on Latpool!
