'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Oldham Athletic - Boundary Park

Boundary Park - Owdham Athletic

It`s Tuesday night so it`s another away game for the travelling faithful. Unlike the previous couple of weeks a trip to Owdham is a welcome respite from the long hauls down and across the country. I`d never thought I`d find myself grateful for a short trip to BP.
It will be like Friends Reunited, but without the 7.50 joining fee. Not only have we Paul Edwards + Les the goalie to reacquaint ourselves with we have the pleasure of my old mukka`s Richie Wellens & Mr Pie himself good old Sean Gregan. It`ll be a toss up on the night on which of these two receives the most verbal abuse from the travelling fans. In return however expect Scotty to receive a warm welcome from the BP fans, here`s hoping he`s not in a sentimental mood on the night.

How to get there
This should be fun. I`ll go on record as stating no matter how many times I go to BP I always get lost. I seem to go up + down that dual carriageway looking for the B+Q more times than Mr Gregan will visit the pie shop in a week.
By Car - Leave the M62 at Junction 20 and take the A627 (M) towards Owdham. Take the second slip road off the A627 (M) following the signs for Royton (A663). At the top of the slip road you will find a large roundabout that around it has a McDonalds and a KFC. Turn left at the roundabout onto the A663 towards Royton (beware though of 30mph speed cameras on this stretch). You will be able to see Boundary Park over on your right.

For the Virgin lovers amongst us - There are trains from Manchester Victoria to Owdham Werneth station (15 mins). The ground is 20 minute walk away. Turn right at main road near station and keep straight ahead through traffic lights until you reach roundabout with Tesco on your right. Turn left at roundabout and BP can be seen on opposite side of dual carriageway after approx 600 yards near B&Q Warehouse.

The ground
Behind the goal in the Rochdale Road stand should be the largest number of travelling Pool fans this season. This stand is cold, bitterly cold even in August so be prepared to wrap up warm on a February Evening. Up to 4000 fans can be accommodated here, the one good thing about this stand is that you can (and we will) make some noise. Not a bad view from here.

Where to drink
Last time around we drank in the pub next to the Travelodge situated behind the home end. Despite one of us wearing colours (step forward Worsley - a member on the message board) we received no agro. You have to get there early though as door men appeared nearer the kick off time. The Clayton Arms is a small but busy pub situated next to the ground, the Bluebell Inn is slightly further away and the Old Grey Mare and the White Hart can be found about a 5 minute walk from the away end. You turn right out of the away end on to Sheepfoot Lane then head left to the top. Turn left onto Oldham Rd. The BBI is first + the WH is slightly further down the same road.

Plod & Stewards
Despite all the verbal banter on the internet between these two sides I expect a relatively low presence by plod + stewards.

Fear Factor rating - 5.

Owdham have come from nowhere to put themselves right in the mixer approaching the latter end of the season. A disputed goal brought them back in to the game at Bloomers and this should be 3rd time lucky in trying to get this match played. BP has been a reasonably lucky ground for us over recent seasons, and Morrell`s last minute equalizer at Bloomers earlier on in the season will have enhanced our bogey status towards the Latics. One thing`s for certain if one team does win the respective message boards on t`internet will be unbearable for the next couple of weeks.
