A Doncaster Rovers Fans View ..

It has been an interesting summer at Doncaster. Bouncing straight back up at the first time of asking on a dramatic last day at Brentford.

I have left this until the last possible moment before writing a bit about Doncaster ahead of the new season.

Whilst a few players have arrived this summer, everyone involved with Doncaster has been waiting to see what happened this week off the pitch.

There has been the possibility of a £20 million investment that would obviously have made a huge difference to the player budget. It now seems things have stalled a bit because another party have also shown an interest.

Because of the possibility of an investment, Rovers have been linked with players such as Shay Given, Richard Dunne, Stephen Ireland all from Aston Villa and a return of former favourite Billy Sharp.

It now looks like none of this will happen.

It has also been an interesting summer with players out of contract. Rovers had nine players that they wished to offer new deals. Until last week, only four had committed their future to the club. It is now much clearer. Only veteran defender Andy Griffin is yet to commit, whilst defender Tommy Spurr turned down a new deal to join Blackburn Rovers. The only other player to turn down a new deal was veteran goalkeeper Neil Sullivan, who returned to his former club Leeds United in a coaching capacity.

Of the players who have arrived, I am quietly confident.

Mark Duffy is a tricky winger who joined from Scunthorpe United. Despite being relegated with Scunthorpe last season, he was amongst the leaders in League One for assists.

Midfielder Marc De Val Fernandez looks a good signing having arrived from Real Madrid but unfortunately he looks like being on the sidelines for around three months after doing knee ligament damage in pre-season.

Highly regarded midfielder Harry Forrester has signed from Brentford. He almost joined Ajax two-years ago but decided he wanted to stay in England. Rovers beat off competition to sign him this summer but unfortunately, he is another who is sidelined. He is expected to be out for a month with a ligament injury.

Former Manchester United youngster Luke McCullough has signed but the 19-year-old is seen as one for the future.>br>

Rovers have brought in two Premier League players this week. Former Chelsea goalkeeper Ross Turnbull has signed and South African international captain Bongani Khumalo has joined on a season long loan from Tottenham Hotspur.

Richie Wellens, a player who you need no introduction to, is training with Rovers but a deal to bring him to the Keepmoat could hang on the investment.

We definitely need to add a few more players before the transfer window closes. We need back up in goal, we are short in defence and the striker options look limited.

I do think Mark Duffy and Harry Forrester, when fit, will have really good seasons and Dean Furman, another South African international, looked good whilst on loan last season and he made his deal permanent in the summer.

At the moment, I would take one place above the relegation zone but you never know in this division what might happen.

Finally, I read your article on your previous trips to the Keepmoat stadium and was particularly interested in the bit about bouncers as stewards. At that time, there were also plenty of complaints coming from Rovers fans as well. I do believe the club have come a long way since then. The club are working very hard with the supporters to make the whole experience at the Keepmoat a much better one. I hope you enjoy your visit to the Keepmoat on Saturday apart from the result.
