'Pool Set To Capture Kevin Phillips

Vital Blackpool can confirm that the Seasiders are set to announce the signing of veteran striker Kevin Phillips.

The 37 year old is currently a free agent after leaving Birmingham City and was first linked to the Seasiders earlier this afternoon on Twitter by respected North-East based journalist Simon Crabtree.

Speculation about the move has since gathered pace, and in the last hour Vital have had the move confirmed to them.

Phillips - who turns 38 later this month - began his career at non-league Baldock Town after being released by Southampton.

Initially a right back, he was converted to a striker and ended up bagging 45 goals in 71 games.

His form there earned him a move to Watford. Despite a year out there through injury, he moved to Sunderland for around £500,000 having scored 24 goals in 59 games for the Hornets.

It was at Sunderland that he achieved national status - scoring 113 goals in 208 league games and earning caps for England in the process.

However, Sunderland's relegation from the Premier League in 2003 saw Phillips leave for Southampton in a £3.25 million deal.

Southampton were also relegated from the Premier League however, and Phillips moved onto Aston Villa for £1 million just two years after joining the Saints.

Since then, Phillips has played for Villa's rivals West Brom and Birmingham, before leaving the Blues earlier this summer.

It is believed that the Seasiders hope to announce Phillips' signing tomorrow.
