Matthews Boots Sold For £38,400
Stanley Matthews' boots from the famous 1953 FA Cup Final were today sold at auction for £38,400.
Originally expected to fetch between £6,000 and £8,000, an unknown bidder, believed to be from Stoke-on-Trent, paid around five times the estimate for the battered leather boots that are missing one stud on the left boot (but apart from that, come with complete laces and studs).
The boots were presented to Matthews' long-term friend Wilf Coomer after the game, and have been authenticated by all the relevant authorities.
It is as yet unknown whether the new owner of the boots plans to retain them for their own private collection or to donate them to the National Football Museum to accompany Matthews' shirt from the final which is on display.
Today's auction came the day after the tenth anniversary of Matthews' death. I need not say how much of a legend he was and indeed still is - every 'Pool fan should know the name 'Stanley Matthews' and the importance it carries.
RIP Sir Stan.
