The Numbers game

Number of players used per season:

2007/08 = 29

2006/07 = 32

2005/06 = 39

2004/05 = 40

2003/04 = 35

2002/03 = 32

2001/02 = 31

It makes sense to say the fewer players used the more consistent performances you get and so the better results you get.

Pool used 79 players during the two seasons that we narrowly avoided relegation from League One. Desperate measures called for desperation in the transfer market with players signing on loan right, left and centre. In January 2006 Simon Grayson, just two months into the job, signed more than ten players in the transfer window to try to find a team capable of surviving.

Last season Pool used just 29 players and it was evident throughout the season that Larry trusted his squad and rarely made wholesale changes from match to match.

It remains to be seen how many players Pool will use this coming season. But if we keep the total below 30 then the chances are the squad will have performed well enough to have survived again.

Maybe the answer to consistency is simple then. Just have a smaller squad which is made up of more talented players erning slightly more than a huge squad and finances spread thinly.
