Head To Head With Southampton
Tomorrow sees Blackpool taking on Southampton in their first league clash since 17th December 1977, the last season that the Seasiders were in the second tier.
Our record away from home is to say the least poor, with only one victory, and five draws to show from 18 matches. The solitary victory took place only months after England won the World Cup, 31st December 1966 to be precise. And what a victory it was with the Pool running out easy 5-1 victors. Hugh Fisher who went on to play for Southampton scored the opening goal! This was Blackpool's only away win of the 1966-67 season when we finished bottom with only 21 points and were relegated to Division Two.
Southampton's record victory however was the 8-2 one they inflicted on us back on 3rd November 1928!
Not surpringly at home we have had considerably more success - 14 victories and just 4 defeats. 5-1 was once again our record scoreline, this time the game played on 4th January 1930.
Our complete league record to date is as follows :-
Plyd 36 W 15 D 5 L 16 F 70 A 67
Hopefully the change of venue will work to Blackpool's advantage, and the Seasiders will leave the South Coast with another three points to aid their climb away from the relegation zone.
