I, like many other Pool fans, believe that we witnessed a domineering performance from the Tangerines' yesterday that should have seen us score half a dozen.
Watching the highlights from The Cahmpionship, Ipswich showed everyone how to finish chances in their 6 - 0 demolition of Bristol City. Pool carved out similar golden opportunities at Fortress Bloomfield against Scunny, most notebaly in the first half, but failed to take them. In the end our Latvian legend Kaspars popped up with the goods to see us over the line. But it could have been a canter with the chances we created and missed. 4 - 0 would not have flattered.
We certainly showed real confidence in our forward play right up until it came to putting the ball in the net. We, at times, excelled against a decidely ordinary Scunthorpe side (who should surely struggle to survive based on yesterday's showing).
Obviously that key difference between our win and Ipswich's triumph was their superior finishing and quality in the final third. It's no secret that we need another striker so I won't even bother labouring on the point.
Certianly we must take the positives out of the performance yesterday, and, of course the result. After another ridiculous international break we take on a Southampton side at Saint Mary's who are shipping goals for fun. This trip is followed by two more crucial home games against woeful Norwich and struggling QPR. With our home form looking solid (still unbeaten) we could push ourselves well away from the bottom pile with positive results against these teams in and around us. Don't forget we should have bodies back in the squad for these games - Jackson, Evatt and Burgess. Relegation candidates I hear you cry! No way, mid table heaven more like! Fingers crossed!
