The Vital View
Forum member, BollieBoy tells us what went wrong on New Years Day at Saltergate.
Well the run of wins comes to an end in horrendous conditions at Saltergate. The challenge now is to respond as we did to the Tranmere defeat and if we can do that then I cannot see any reason why we will not be able to claim a play-off position at season end and, who knows, maybe better.
As for the match itself you could almost have written the script before the game in the fact that Chesterfield would play a physical game and put the ball long to the 2 big forwards. Unfortunately Evatt did not have the best of games and in Caleb Folan Chesterfield have a forward who possesses pace as well as body strength. The first goal came when Folan got the ball facing goal and was able to run at Jacko before playing a good ball to Hurst who finished well. The second goal, which had a hint of offside (if it had been Ben Burgess at the other end then it would definitely would had been flagged even if it was 3 yards on!) but again was a decent finish which gave Evans no chance. At this point we were beginning to get on top so to concede a second was doubly disappointing.
When the wind got up and the rain came down at half-time the chances of us getting back into the game was blown away as the pitch became more and more unpredictable and the wind was making it difficult for us to play the long ball out. These factors played into Chesterfield's hands and scuppered any chance of playing a passing game. When Moss pulled off an excellent save from Evatt following probably our best passing phase of the match the possibility of pulling 2 goals back had gone though Gnashers had a late chance where he could have done better.
Overall there were a few below performances today. Burgess was poor - he appears to be trying too hard and lacking confidence at the moment but I do wish we would try to support him rather than get on his back.
As for Mr Olivier and the linesman I really don't know where to start. After Wes broke through the Chesterfield defence to be one-on-one with the goalie only to be pulled back as he had been fouled as he received the ball you knew what was going to happen next. Sure enough Chesterfield were then awarded a free-kick after a foul had been committed 5 or 6 passes before they lost the ball. The linesman then proceeded to flag Evatt offside (when he was well on) as he crossed for Burgess to put into the net before flagging Burgess twice when he was played through and was patently 2 or 3 yards on. When Allott then took out Wilko with a dangerous, reckless tackle you just knew the red card which should have been waved wouldn't appear and we were proved right. I am sorry but Mr Olivier shouldn't be allowed to referee a tiddlywinks match as the guy is a total muppet.
Now that is out of the system let's look ahead and for godsake get out of this division as I really don't want to go back to Saltergate again for a long time (maybe that washing machine may have been removed by then !).
